Itinerary

DayItineraryUpdates While There
Thu  5 Aug Depart NJ; overnight flight. The long journey...
Fri  6 Aug Arrive Edinburgh; check-in Napier; relax; rehearse. We arrived sleep deprived, unloaded, ate lunch, checked-in, rehearsed, pipers assisted by local expert piper, a wee bit of rain. Time for some well deserved sleep!!
Sat  7 Aug Tour Edinburgh; Perform 3:30p Edinburgh Castle. Morning free time walk into Old City; pipe bands preparing for massed bands. City bus tour. Performance at Edinburgh Castle was excellent, not enough room for the crowd! Pictures and video taken by visitors from all over the world of our Highlanders. Somewhat atypical blue skies for Scotland. Night walk to Princes Street.
Sun  8 Aug March in the Cavalcade Parade; Traditional Scottish evening. Breakfast, group shots, preparing for the parade, and then... the BIG Parade. Those Jersey Highlanders were greatly appreciated by the large crowd, represented the USA with excellence in music, dress, and deportment.
Mon  9 Aug Tour Wallace Monument and Stirling Castle. Perform 2:00p Stirling Castle. Our 3rd and final performance at Stirling Castle with a good crowd braving the weather. Great scenic views from the Wallace Monument and the Castle. Some rain, some blue skies. Night Tour of The Haunted Underground Vaults of Edinburgh.
Tue 10 Aug Tour Ancrum; Melrose Abbey; Jedburgh. Attend Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Drove through the lovely landscape to the Borders (near the border with England) to Ancrum, where William Livingston's family originated. GL is named after him and he was the first post revolutionary Governor of NJ, signed the Declaration of Independence. We were greeted by Ancrum's mayor and vicker, who did not know were were visiting. However, since Ancrum is a small town of about 600 people the arrival of two coach busses is unusual. He said the last time he saw coaches in Ancrum was the last time that NJ band visited -- 18 years ago to the day, 8/10/1992, the vicker's first year in Ancrum. So, he deduced it was us yet again. We took pictures and were invited into the church where he showed us a plaque with pictures from the last visit. We then journeyed to Melrose Abbey, ate ice cream. Back in Edinburgh after a short period of free time, we ate dinner, and enjoyed the spectaular Edinburgh Military Tattoo in the Castle.
Wed 11 Aug Tour Glasgow; Attend Concert at Royal Glasgow Conert Hall of the St. Laurence O'Toole Pipe Band(2010 European Champions, competing in the Glasgow 8/14 World Pipe Band Championship -- addendum: 3 days later they won the World Championships for best band and best drum corp!!). One group visited the Museum of Scotland: deserves more time on the next trip. We met Father O on the ride to Glasgow (Mr O's Great Uncle). In Glasgow we saw pipe bands as part of Piping Live!, the National Piping Centre and Museum, Glasgow Cathedral. A nice fish and chips meal was had. We then enjoyed the excellent, energetic concert of the St. Laurence O'Toole Pipe Band along with Pipedown.
Thu 12 Aug Coming home. Not a bad trip home. Time to rest up and get ready for Band Camp!
